Last year I began animating a small gif everyday. The goal was to pass time while waiting on reviews and feedback while learning new motion design skills. I kept it up for a few months before I had to move on. I learned more than I thought I would and I enjoyed having the deadline. It is certainly something I will continue in the future. Until then, enjoy these!
In the fall of 2014 something magical happened in Kansas City. Something that hadn't happened in 30 years. Something that I’d literally dreamed of since I was 6 years old while listening to Denny Matthews on the radio. In the fall of 2014, the Royals made the postseason, and they almost won it all.
During that time, I began to design prints and t-shirts that caught on around the metro. The main article of clothing was a shirt that was intended to skirt the copyrights of the MLB. This proved foolish in the end, but sent me on the best journey of my life. I sold over 16,000 shirts, met baseball royalty, attended the World Series and made 6-year-old-me’s dreams come true.
At the root of Bumpleft was my love of baseball. The brand is pretty “on the nose” for this style and influence. A scripted font and angled type scream that this brand is about baseball. And it was. And it was great.
The crown jewel of my retail line was the “Skyline Shield”. As most successful ideas go, the approach was simple. Replace the literal crown in the logo with what I held most dear, the city of Kansas City itself. This idea resonated with thousands of people in the metro and my retail business took off like a 95 mile per hour pitch leaving Kauffman stadium.
The Bulk of the sales for the brand were based on my t-shirt designs. Several other designs followed, but nothing hit a homerun quiet like the Skyline.
To support the clothing line, I created several posters. Some small, some large, but all inspired by Kansas City, Missouri.
I attribute a lot of the success of this brand to timing, luck and my tireless work. Most of that work was spent ensuring the product I put out was of the most supreme quality. The best shirt stock. The best printing. The softest feel. The highest quality shirt and poster I could produce.
This effort took months of painstaking quality control before I reached the ideal product. Luckily, I was able to work with some of the best vendors and manufacturers Kansas City has to offer.
All of the photography for the website and social media was shot by yours truly. I kept the look and feel clean and simple and styled with some vintage touches. The overall feeling helped put my brand on several websites and gained a serious amount of online engagement.
Oxwood is a company that produces handmade desk lamps from wood found near Kansas City. I was tasked with creating the branding, look/feel, photographic style and general creative direction of the brand's identity. The worked earned a local Gold Addy and A National Silver Addy.
When we started work on this brand, we knew we wanted something that connected to old-world craft and midcentury style. The process began as a hand-lettered exploration. That exploration led us to some shapes inspired by the element inside of the light bulbs used on the product.
DISCOVERING THE LOGO
Once we finalized the approach, we began refining the shape itself. The center element is made from three intersecting loops on each side. The overall effect gives the impression of the logo being a light.
The logotype for the brand was inspired by the midcentury foundries and the industrial designers who were making some of the most iconic furniture in the 60s. The type for the logo is slightly modified to soften the edges slightly and remove some of the rigidness that often comes with midcentury design.
For a lamp this beautiful we wanted to give a finishing touch. A hang tag is possibly the most striking way to give the buyer the impression of this brand. We chose to letterpress these hangtags and leave them on during shipping. Some customers love the tag so much they leave it attached!
Each tag is hand numbered to match the serial number of the lamp. The maker then signs his name to his work (and the hangtag) to add one last artisanal touch.
The gang at Primary Color Music were looking for a refresh to their website. We worked together to brush everything up. After a few versions, we realized we made an entirely new site. I'm happy to say the site looks great!
The site was designed from the ground up. We started with a clean slate and kept it pretty clean throughout. We added a feed of videos and let the videos themselves be the star of the show. Some custom coding was used to create brand-specific effects, but most of the design was kept to a minimal approach.
FoodSaver was a client during my time at Barkley. During a period, I was the art director of their social media channel on Instagram. We had very little budget to work with but a lot of handy and scrappy techniques at our disposal. I hand-lettered, photographed, food styled and laid out a work for the client. We grew their social following on Instagram by 300% in my time working on the brand.
The look and feel of the brand allowed me to explore hand lettering throughout my time on the project. Elements of hand-drawn type were used throughout the images and posts. Some of the posts were centered around this lettering.
We used a very light and Pinterest-inspired look for most of our work. After all, we were hoping for the folks on those feeds to connect with our work. The photography used mostly natural light and gave the photos a very clean look.
